2010 Greatest Gardening Grandparent
Friday, September 10th

Awards Presentation 7 PM
The Lebaon Farmer's Market Booth, Commercial Exhibits Building

Entry Classes:

1. Essay
2. Daily Journal
3. Photo Essay (DVD or Scrapbook)

This is the 10th Year Celebration of The Greatest Grandparent Essay Contest. Any youth between the ages of 6-18 may enter this contest, but this year we have a theme: THE GREATEST GARDENING GRANDPARENT.

Many families in Russell County have a long rich history of farming and now is the time for the youth and grandparents to share with the entire county. This year we have added new ways to enter this contest including making a written journal or a photo essay (by DVD or scrapbook). The traditional 100 word essay is still another "great" way to enter. Activity based prizes will be donated by local businesses and members of the community. Visit the Lebanon Farmers' Market to receive seed packets (limited donated supply by High Mowing Organic Seeds). We can also give you a few ideas to get started.

In 100 words or less please share why your grandparent is the 2010 GREATEST GARDENING GRANDPARENT. You may write about any experience that involves gardening or using fresh produce with your grandparent.

You may submit a 3-5 minute photo essay DVD with pictures and/or sound or you may submit a completed scrapbook (less than 50 pages) with photos and artwork showing why your grandparent is the 2010 GREATEST GARDENING GRANDPARENT. All pictures should be taken by the child (unless the child is in the photo).

Contest Guidelines:

Entries for one grandmother & one grandfather will be chosen from each age group with all the categories combined.

Prizes Awarded:

  • AGES: 6-10
  • AGES: 11-13
  • AGES: 14-18

Plaque, T-Shirt, Season Ticket, Unlimited Ride Certificate, cotton Candy, RCMC Bikes
Lebanon Farmers' Market $50 Gift Certificate for winning grandparents

Sponsored by: Russell Co. Fair Association, Lebanon Farmers' Market, RCMC, People Inc.

Entries must be received by August 28, 2010 but can be passed in any time after June 9, 2010 at The Lebanon Farmers' Market (Wednesdays/Saturdays) or the Russell County Fair Board (PO Box 2105 Lebanon, VA 24266). Winning grandparents will be announced on Kid's Day (Sept. 10, 2010 at 7:00 PM) at the Russell County Fair & Horse Show in the Commercial Building.

Judges will be selected by the Russell County Fair & Horse Show and the public will cast votes during commercial building hours. Entries will be judged on merits of grandparents, gardening influence on youth. Creativity, expression, sincerity, originality, and neatness of each entry will be taken into account. Essays must be hand written by applicant. All decisions are final.

Contest entries can include stories that Grandparents have shared about gardening in their youthful years, a trip to the local farmers market, canning or cooking with fresh garden produce, daily journal entries from a current gardening project, photo journals of cooking fresh produce or using fresh cut flowers for arrangements or drying, etc... Just use words or photos to share real life experiences of gardening or using fresh produce with your Grandparent that makes sharing time with them special to you. All entries will then be shared with Russell County at the RUSSELL COUNTY FAIR.

Deadline for entries is August 28, 2010.
